Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin (Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin), a water-soluble chlorophyll derivative, will be a global market for dietary supplements of US $460 million in 2023 with an annual growth rate of 12%, and North America and Asia-Pacific region with a consumption share of 75%. According to a double-blind trial in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2022, daily Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin supplementation with 100 mg increased the rate of excretion of environmental toxins (e.g., PAHs) by 38% and liver glutathione (GSH) by 27%. The mechanism of action is associated with the ability to chelate heavy metal ions such as lead and cadmium with 1.5-fold higher binding than the traditional chelating agent EDTA. Additionally, antioxidant activity of this ingredient is remarkable: in vitro experiments demonstrate that its free radical scavenging (DPPH) IC50 value is 0.8μg/mL, 3.2 times that of vitamin E.
In industrial production, Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin has very good cost-effectiveness advantages. In 2023, a Jiangsu biotechnology company in China increased the extraction efficiency of silkworm sand raw materials from 68% to 92% with supercritical CO₂ extraction technology, purity was 98.5% (EP standard), and cost of production per kilogram reduced to 120 US dollars (180 US dollars for traditional acid-base method). Nature’s Way’s US brand 50 mg capsule, for instance, has a 55% repeat purchase rate on the Amazon site, and users comment that after 4 weeks of consistent use, the body odor strength reduces by 72%. Market assessment suggests it has high potential in the oral health market: 0.2% Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin mouthrinses can reduce plaque index of patients with gingivitis by 45%, being as effective as chlorhexidine but with tooth staining risk decreased 90%.
The trial also attests to its value in managing long-term diseases. A 2021 study at Seoul National University in South Korea found that daily supplementation with 150 mg of Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin could reduce LDL by 19%, enhance HDL by 12% and reduce atherosclerotic plaque volume by 23% in patients with high cholesterol. Its anticancer activity is also worth noting: in vitro testing against cancer cells has shown that this component induces apoptosis of colon cancer cells by activation of the caspase-3 pathway to the extent of 64%, and its normal cell cytotoxicity is 15% lower than that of chemotherapy drug 5-FU. Animal models also showed that its anti-inflammatory action can reduce IL-6 levels by 58% in ulcerative colitis model mice and induce intestinal mucosal healing by 2.3-fold.
Policy and technology accelerate the deployment. The EU EFSA approved Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin as a food coloring (E141) in 2020 with an acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 15 mg/kg body weight. In 2023, Kao Corporation of Japan increased the bioavailability from 42% to 81% through their nano-emulsification technology, and launched a functional beverage containing the ingredient, which had more than $30 million in sales during the first year of listing. China’s “Health Food Raw Materials Catalogue” 2024 edition puts it under the “detoxification and beauty” category, with ≥95% content and ≤5% color price deviation between batches. The global market will reach $980 million by 2030 with a compound annual growth rate of 14%, especially in the field of metabolic syndrome and environmental pollution response, the penetration rate will increase to 38%. This phenomenon not only reflects the functional conversion of natural pigments, but also illustrates the strong consumer demand for multi-effect supplements.
